Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Local and area residents should now be safer when venturing into downtown Brownsville during night hours.<\/p>\n<p>A new substation has opened its doors in the Market Square in a building considered to be one of the oldest in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The PD facility is equipped with a four-officer bike patrol and will open six days a week. The days and hours are yet to be determined.<\/p>\n<p>Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez said having a presence in the downtown area will make the area safer and more efficient when responding to calls from the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have limited resources but we will provide better police services,\u201d he during Wednesday\u2019s, Aug, 28 ribbon cutting of the substation. \u201cThis is finally happening in the 35 years I have here (with PD).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people, including city and business leaders and interested citizen, attended the event.<\/p>\n<p>Esmy Villarreal, president of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the substation on behalf of the chamber\u2019s 700-plus members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also celebrating the remodeling of Market Square,\u201d she said. \u201cWe would like to congratulate the City of Brownsville.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN Local and area residents should now be safer when venturing into downtown Brownsville during night hours.
