Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Construction of the new Emergency Medical Services\/fire hall building is nearing completion and a plan is to present it to the community this month.<\/p>\n<p>October is also the 80th anniversary of the city\u2019s volunteer fire department.<\/p>\n<p>Gene Daniels, the EMS director, said last month the building was more than 95 percent completed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We need to finish the landscaping and a few other details,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the building is pretty much finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said they were planning to hold its grand opening in conjunction with the fire department anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if the building was built within budget specification, Daniels said yes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going be in the $1.4 million figure,\u201d he said. \u201cWe spent some money in building a road and into expanding the utility lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EMS\/fire hall facility is clearly visible from Texas Highway 100.<\/p>\n<p>The area there is becoming one of the city\u2019s hottest economic growth places.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the facility, the city is planning to build a new city hall and, later on, a police department.<\/p>\n<p>To the east of there is an apartment complex that has attracted more people into Los Fresnos.<\/p>\n<p>Los Fresnos now has a population of more 7,000, but according to a study prepared for the Community Development Corp., more than 23,000 people live within a 5-mile radius.<\/p>\n<p>Other economic indicators, put the median household income at $51,719 and a median age of 28.3 years.<\/p>\n<p>And the local school district has a population of 10,732 students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN Construction of the new Emergency Medical Services\/fire hall building is nearing completion and a plan is to present it to the community this month.
