Photo: LFN Archive<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A new program to train existing nurses and nursing assistants is taking place thanks to a partnership between Valley Baptist Medical Center and Texas State Technical College.<\/p>\n<p>The two Harlingen entities received a Skills Development Fund grant of $301,238 to train 155 people in the areas of health care and social assistance.<\/p>\n<p>This include certified nursing assistants, registered nurses and nurse managers.<\/p>\n<p>Once they complete the course, they are expected to earn an average hourly wage of $34.37, a press release from Texas Workforce Commission states.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Sotelo, a spokeswoman for TSTC, said classes began last week and training will take at VBMC-Harlingen.<\/p>\n<p>Isidro Ramos, a TWC staff member, said this is the first time a grant is given to the Harlingen hospital for skills upgrade for their employees.<\/p>\n<p>So far, about 40 RNs are enrolled and taking the class at TSTC.<\/p>\n<p>A check presentation was held Friday morning at TSTC University Center Foyer.
