{"id":9230,"date":"2018-10-19T18:24:49","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T18:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=9230"},"modified":"2018-10-19T18:24:49","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T18:24:49","slug":"shrimp-season-producing-below-average-yields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=9230","title":{"rendered":"Shrimp Season Producing Below Average Yields"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9231\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9231\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9231\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/shrimptrawler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/shrimptrawler.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/shrimptrawler-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/shrimptrawler-405x270.jpg 405w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/shrimptrawler-60x40.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A trawler sits on waters of the Gulf of Mexico as the 2018-19 shrimp season continues.Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 2018-19 shrimp season continues and boat owners from the Brownsville-Port Isabel area said it has been somewhat below average.<\/p>\n<p>Fishing in waters of the Gulf of Mexico has been interrupted several times due to a busy hurricane season but that hasn\u2019t impacted the season, industry representatives said.<\/p>\n<p>Carlton Reyes, a veteran boat owner at the Brownsville Shrimp Basin, said his trawlers went bust the night of Monday Oct., 8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey hardly caught any shrimp but lots of crabs,\u201d he said. \u201cA hurricane stir up the waters sending and that makes the shrimp go into deeper waters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But others are blaming a below average to the lack of fresh water early in the year, something which shrimp need to spawn and to go grow before going out into open waters.<\/p>\n<p>Guadalupe Ochoa, owner of several boats, also said shrimp catches are lower and prices too.<\/p>\n<p>He said the shrimp industry has had its ups and downs in the nearly 50 years he has been fishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical right now,\u201d Ocahoa said, \u201cbut I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He blamed part of the problem on buyers who like to manipulate prices.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, the 2018-19 season is forecasted to produce 39.2 million pounds, compared to the historical annual average of 56.6 million pounds harvested in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Another matter shrimpers are facing today is lower market prices.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes said prices average a little more than $4 a pound, compared to about $5 during the 2017-18 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Brownsville-Port Isabel area used to have the biggest fleet of shrimp trawler with a many as 700 vessels at one time.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the fleet has about 140 trawlers altogether.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN The 2018-19 shrimp season continues and boat owners from the Brownsville-Port Isabel area said it has been somewhat below average.
