Photos: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Construction of the new Los Fresnos City Hall has officially begun and the landmark event was described as a historical day for the city, its residents and Cameron County.<\/p>\n<p>City, business and county leaders as well as concerned citizens met at the site on Monday, Oct. 29 in a ceremony to break the ground where the $3.2 million project is expected to be built by August of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow, what a day! exclaimed City Manager Mark Milum. \u201cWe spent several years looking for the needs of today and of tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The city bought the property after looking at a number of sites in town and it\u2019s finally happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the existing 5,500-square-foot city hall has served its purpose even though overcrowding in a limited space have made working somewhat uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the city workforce, the building has been housing the local police department where an office space was turned into a holding room.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9307\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9307\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9307\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2902-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2902-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2902-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ROTC-Navy from Los Fresnos school district attended the ceremony. Photos: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018We have truly maximized the space as much as we could,\u201d Milum said. \u201cThis new building will last for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city manager said the new 11,500-square-foot city hall will have enough room to accommodate the Los Fresnos Community Development Corp. and the Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>That pleased the staff with both organizations as they usually ask for permission to use the restroom at Wells Fargo Bank or go across the street to the nearest convenience store.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Polo Narvaez thanked the entire city staff for working together toward common goals that will benefit everybody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything came together with everybody\u2019s contribution,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have been working on this project for more than five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Narvaez said they have a conservative type of municipal government and like to keep it like that for the benefit of the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am hoping we can continue working together for the good of the city,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have seen a lot of growth in the last ten years mostly without having to raise taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9308\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9308\" class=\"wp-image-9308 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2909.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2909.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_2909-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">City Manager Mark Milum addressing the audience during the Oct. 29 ground breaking. Photos: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Asked about the cost of the project, Narvaez said they obtained a good source of funding at a reasonable interest rate and the money will also allow them to improve some city streets.<\/p>\n<p>Police Chief Hector Gonzalez said space at his department has been an issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to alleviate that,\u201d he said, once the new city hall is built. \u201cWe are going to feel like orphans, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. extolled the significance of building a new city hall, so did Carlos Cascos, former county judge and former secretary of state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN Construction of the new Los Fresnos City Hall has officially begun and the landmark event was described as a historical day for the city, its residents and Cameron County.
