Taylor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>What is it that is so appealing about ghost stories? Is it the thrill of being a part of something out of this world? Is it a glimpse into the possibility that just maybe we aren\u2019t alone or that there\u2019s an afterlife? Whatever the reasons are, people love ghost stories. At the UTRGV campus in Brownsville, ghost stories seem to run rampant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/lifestyle\/slideshow\/Haunted-Texas-Colleges-186041.php\">article<\/a>\u00a0released by San Antonio Express-News, the UTRGV Brownsville campus was named one of the most haunted campuses in Texas. The article claims that the campus is haunted by cavalrymen and a woman in Victorian-style clothing. Photo: David Pike\/UTRGV<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Anthony Knopp, professor emeritus of history, said Brownsville is one of the oldest areas in the Rio Grande Valley. The UTRGV Brownsville campus is set near the historic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utrgv.edu\/civilwar-trail\/civil-war-trail\/cameron-county\/fort-brown\/index.htm\">Fort Brown<\/a>, which includes an old hospital building and morgue that housed people plagued by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/yellowfever\/index.html\">yellow fever<\/a>\u00a0virus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMatamoros, across the river from us (Brownsville), goes back to the time of the American Revolution, so there has been people and communities here for a very long time, and there have been various buildings constructed here,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen some of them go back as far as they do, this is the kind of thing that invites speculation about ghostly hauntings that might have occurred. Especially here on the Fort Brown field where the hospital was and the morgue, and all kinds of places that invite that kind of speculation and experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. David Bowles, UTRGV assistant professor in the Department of Literatures and Cultural Studies, authored the book \u201cGhosts of the Rio Grande Valley,\u201d and is considered the resident \u2018<em>cucuy\u2019<\/em>\u00a0expert. He said he\u2019s heard plenty of ghost stories throughout this lifetime, including some stories from the UTRGV Edinburg campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have heard people talk about ghosts and there are some restrooms on campus (Edinburg) that if you go there at the wrong time, you could encounter poltergeists and things like that,\u201d he said. \u201cDefinitely, some spooky stuff happens in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9317\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/UTB-Campus-11-2-07-086.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/UTB-Campus-11-2-07-086.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/UTB-Campus-11-2-07-086-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Human Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowles believes that, regardless if you\u2019re a believer or a skeptic, the ghost stories people tell should not be dismissed, as they are still human experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t believe there are stories that should be dismissed because \u2018Oh, ghosts are not real,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThere are stories that we should study and kind of relish because of what they say about the human condition more than anything else. But also, because if they turn out to be true, that\u2019s pretty freakin\u2019 cool, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knopp admits that he\u2019s a skeptic when it comes to the supernatural and he\u2019s never seen a ghost, at least not to his knowledge.
