Photo: Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>by Eric Galatas<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>AUSTIN, Texas \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The major players in the meat industry have developed what they\u2019re calling a stewardship plan that they say will ensure that they use antibiotics in livestock only when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>At issue is the possible development of deadly super-bug infections that are resistant to antibiotics and harmful to humans.<\/p>\n<p>The group has developed a set of guidelines and processes.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Swedberg, chairman of the board for the Farm Foundation and retired chairman of Hormel Foods, says companies will use these best practices to avoid a situation where antibiotics would be unable to protect people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gain antibiotic resistance, and that\u2019s concerning across particularly in human and livestock sides,\u201d he states. \u201cSo, this is taking the one health initiative and looking to be more judicious and more thoughtful, and have good processes in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/%3Cbr%20\/%3Ewww.fda.gov\/AnimalVeterinary\/NewsEvents\/CVMUpdates\/ucm588086.htm\" target=\"parent\">Food and Drug Administration report<\/a>, antibiotic use in farm animals was down 33 percent between 2016 and 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.farmfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/attachments\/1927-AEPreport%20FINAL%201-15-16.pdf\" target=\"parent\">stewardship plan<\/a>\u00a0comes in response to new federal policies that would require label changes for some of the drugs, limit the ways they can be used and require that a veterinarian administer them.<\/p>\n<p>Some livestock producers have said the federal guidelines are confusing and that they need more training to meet their responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Swedberg says the new plan standardizes terms so everyone is on the same page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe brought to the table food service, retailers, pharmaceuticals, livestock groups, processors \u2013 all the organizations that are dealing with this each and every day \u2013 to come up with a mutually agreed upon definition for the stewardship and, then, the components that comprise it,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Swedberg says the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration have been partners in this process, under both the Obama and Trump administrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Eric Galatas AUSTIN, Texas \u2013\u00a0The major players in the meat industry have developed what they\u2019re calling a stewardship plan that they say will ensure that they use antibiotics in livestock only when necessary.
