The bill unanimously passed out of the Senate Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas\u2019 historic buildings are an important part of our culture. They are an enduring connection to our past,\u201d Senator Lucio said. \u201cThis legislation helps build greater awareness of Texas\u2019 unique historic places and encourages the long-term preservation of significant cultural resources that have survived in Texas communities for many generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Bill 111 requires the Texas Historical Commission to designate certain buildings as \u201cTexas Historical Use Buildings.\u201d This designation is to be given to any Texas building that is considered worthy of preservation because of its history, culture, or architecture. Additionally, a building must have been used for at least 150 years for a purpose that benefits the community in which it is located, as determined by the Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Should Senate Bill 111 pass into law, these buildings would be eligible to apply for grant funds through the Preservation Trust Fund.
