And few miles west of the Jackson\u2019s home, John Ferdinand Webber set up a home with his wife, Sylvia Hector, and their children.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhat\u2019s really interesting about these two particular families is that they both had white husbands and emancipated black slave wives,\u201d Bacha-Garza said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Escaped slaves heard these two families could help them reach Mexico.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThey knew of the Webbers. Photo: Silver Salas\/UTRGV<\/p><\/div>\n<div><strong>RISKS TO FAMILIES<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u201cBoth ranches had ferry landings on their property, which made it easy for them to shepherd escaped slaves over the river, across into Mexico,\u201d Bacha-Garza said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The quick access to Mexico not only helped fugitive slaves, but also acted as a safeguard for family members. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001FthR4vYcLYommbdws6hw4KlqYRXH7Zj5EA0Y34IydpVzumy_6TajSSradRT8MOdt7B2E4vh7UGYl-HyHtC3MguejvNEpmxe_Gb8MHhnnb_1pWypTy6Frx3G5Fx9g3gmkveRgi5GqysbK9l0LE2FddpUyJfb6nBZ6lbJnWG71B6mH_RdcC8WQJBjWSSHqxrjR6PH85M5gVQXL9-0fpbhuOk4Phpre1tRLpjRj1PF_eP4OmSHOkq4IROvfH88eQHNruL2HYhKhDdAqD34ZBY1JylcrEhyXlcTK9Ww5JIqCdc2cdvY4Y1ZqzGpJIqxtwxWzddui3jMjAeC1xlC0RUzz-VViZ4RFX0MklfIPVEFhqQsWBZ8zh34JY7fmMVstelmW2Bbsk7m0QUnzZhbh8tmFU7yunLJXuPZ07sXhc-VUGBujOhqTuYzX3xEDkDBC0FHWBkSzJ1WCx5EHz3rYKQZrt8MCjQZsXTU0GJucHfyMb9wXZQikFl08kr4WUai5U4VtTuchXQl7LtsVBm_1vKhWNlT01OjyHZpZ8oaj6Nsu-WLmfhJT81vnxl696HNcBO1l2CLtImUe_LJweZ2DPzahsgWKMsulBFVJOjnu1MBooNWfrEKI4-ixzg==&amp;c=1cQ9XmoBOkCRSFYb3pJQr4IswLALX4e88uLqhdfifFm83848cVfrfQ==&amp;ch=okztvvMksjFe1fQjxvk4zr6inyuUmkf-_YM9o2WI9B9JWahEqnsekA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fugitive Slave Act<\/a>\u00a0authorized the capture of escaped slaves, and some slave catchers would also kidnap freed slaves and put them back into servitude.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere were plenty of folks out there who were afraid for both reasons that the Fugitive Slave Act would cause them harm,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>People who were caught helping escaped slaves also faced punishment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>RESEARCH SOURCES LIMITED<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Researchers don\u2019t know how many slaves the Jacksons and Webbers helped.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere really aren\u2019t any primary sources left behind, like letters or documents stating that somebody participated in this activity, because it was secret,\u201d Bacha-Garza said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>However, the CHAPS program manager said researchers learned that some fugitive slaves who made it to South Texas did not actually cross the Rio Grande.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThey liked it here so much, they stayed,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>CHAPS will be sharing their research about the Underground Railroad in the Rio Grande Valley at two events this month.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The film \u201cJust a Ferry Ride to Freedom,\u201d debuts 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex on the Edinburg Campus.
