You left your house 15 minutes late, and you get caught in traffic. The reason? Large farm equipment.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s that time of year again, when farmers are beginning to plant from the Rio Grande Valley to Central Texas. It won\u2019t be long, and the rest of the state will follow as the temperatures steadily warm up.<\/p>\n

That means more tractors and large equipment are on the road with you.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve all seen them. They\u2019re large, wide and slow. Your car is fast\u2014much faster than the 25-miles-per hour of the farmer\u2019s equipment. But public roads are often the only way to move it.<\/p>\n

And because Texas is a top agricultural state, every Texan\u2014urban, suburban and rural\u2014will eventually encounter large farm equipment on the road.<\/p>\n

Your fast cars and farmers\u2019 slow tractors can be a recipe for disaster. Accidents involving farm equipment and cars happen every year. And families are forever changed.<\/p>\n

Farmers respect your right to the road, but they\u2019d like that same courtesy returned to them.<\/p>\n

It seems, however, that awareness is often the toughest thing to grow. Awareness about what farmers and ranchers do, but also about farm safety\u2014on and off the road.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s where we all come into play.<\/p>\n

Here are 5 things you can do when you meet farm equipment on the road.<\/p>\n

  1. Be alert and cautious. And give large farm equipment and other slow-moving vehicles space.<\/li>\n
  2. Do not pass if you are in a space designated as a \u201cNo Passing Zone\u201d or in any area that is not safe to do so\u2014intersections, bridges and railroad crossings, among others.<\/li>\n
  3. Make sure the tractor isn\u2019t trying to make a left turn before you pass on the left.<\/li>\n
  4. Don\u2019t tailgate.<\/li>\n
  5. Be careful when you do get the chance to pass. And often, farmers will move their equipment over when it is safe to do so.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It can be frustrating, but those farmers are just trying to get to and from their job, too. Only it\u2019s a little different. Their office is that tractor you\u2019re stuck behind. Their hours are likely sun up to sun down, and they\u2019re trying to beat whatever Mother Nature is throwing their way.<\/p>\n

    But they get it. They know 25 miles-per-hour isn\u2019t the fastest or most ideal speed. They understand you have places to be, deadlines to meet and families to see. They can relate.<\/p>\n

    There are even bills filed in the Texas Legislature that would make it legal to drive slow-moving vehicles, like farm equipment, on the shoulder. That would help alleviate some of the issues.<\/p>\n

    Another bill, if passed, would give farmers more flexibility on where they place the slow moving vehicle sign\u2014the large, neon orange triangle that is displayed on the back of the vehicle. Doing so would make it more visible and hopefully raise more awareness of the speed difference.<\/p>\n

    Because one accident. One moment. One day. All could be life changing.<\/p>\n

    So slow down, and enjoy some good tunes on the radio, catch up on a podcast or listen to an audio book. Being behind a slow-moving vehicle will only add a little extra time to your commute. But being a responsible and courteous driver could save your life and the farmer\u2019s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
