The Los Fresnos chapter of Rotary International is relatively a new organization, yet they are increasingly becoming involved with the community.
The group met for its monthly meeting on Thursday March 21 at Julia’s Restaurant and heard stories from three students with the Los Fresnos school district migrant program.
Donald Henderson, one of the organizations founders, said Rotary International goals are to be involved in the community and be interested in serving as a member worldwide.
He said the local chapter of Rotary International was founded in August 2018 with 16 members.
The 100-plus year old global network has more than 1.2 million members all over the world.
At the meeting, Mariela Gonzalez, Juan Garza and George Alan Garcia shared their experiences as migrant students.
Despite the adversities they faced growing up, the three students are doing well.
Garza plays with the school mariachi band and Garcia with a conjunto group.
They both sang a couple of songs including El Rey and Mi Linda Morena.
Besides Henderson, the other charter members of Rotary International are: Val Champion, Gonzalo Salazar, Adan Cruz, Jaime Barbosa, Orlando Hernandez, Adan Garcia, Polo Narvaez, Darlene Pederson, Martin Magallan, Richard Higgins, Chad Bresson, Jesus Gonzalez, Jose Morones and Albert Escobedo.
