An air show organized and directed by the Commemorative Air Force will take place this coming weekend at the Cameron County Airport.

The show days are Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23, at the airport grounds and skies located east of the Los Fresnos/Bayview area and northwest of the Town of Laguna Vista on FM 106.

This is the first time the Rio Grande Valley CAF hosts such a show since it closed its previous headquarters at the Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport, where it held its last show in 2017.

About 20 airplanes will participate during the two-day show, including A-10 Warthogs and a Boeing PT-17.

There will also be aerobatic flights and all sorts of events on the grounds of the airport.

David Hughston, the board chairman with CAF, is inviting people to come out and watch one of the area’s finest shows that features some of the best aerobatics and war re-enactment displays.

He said it has taken them six months of hard planning to set up the show.

“Our chapter was founded in 1971 as the Commemorative Air Force,” he said. “I have been a member for 40 years.”

In addition to the flying acts, Hughston said there will be some modern aircraft, an arts and craft show and booths from vendors selling foods and other items.

The gates will open at 9 a.m. and flying will start at noon on both days.

Lawn chairs are welcome but no coolers will be allowed.

The air show is the biggest fundraiser for the organization that also depends on the support it gets from sponsors and a number of municipalities.

For example, the Community Development Corporation of Los Fresnos Board of Directors voted during a meeting to allocate $5,000 for the event as the airport falls within Los Fresnos Trade Area.
