Hundreds of area students will be going to school wearing brand new tennis shoes thanks to a Los Fresnos family who runs a business in town.

On Monday, Aug, 12, Angel Lucy’s Funeral Home handed over 600 pairs of brand name shoes to anyone in need of footwear just in time for the new school year.

It’s was the third time the funeral services enterprise owned by Cesar and Belia Ornelas held the shoe giveaway to help the community.

“We are giving a brand new pair of shoes to each kid,” Ornelas said. “This is benefitting students from here, Port Isabel, Olmito and the surrounding areas.”

He said all a family member needs to bring is documentation of what kind of assistance they are getting at home.

”We don’t turn anybody away,” he said. ”These are brand name tennis shoes.”

Some students and parents said a pair of shoes cost anywhere from $10 to more than $60, depending on the brand or where they are bought.

The Ornelas said the shoe they bought and gave out are from such brand names as Nike, Converse, Adidas and Under Armour.

Gwen Delgado brought her three children to get new shoes during the giveaway held this time at the funeral home.

“This is really a good thing to do,” she said. “This is a big help for those who are struggling.”

The Ornelas, funeral home staff and members of Los Fresnos Rotary Club were helping to distribute the shoes as the students waited for their turn to try them on.
