Harvey’s LP Gas Co. in Los Fresnos is getting a facelift.

The 30-plus years old business is getting its gas pumps and canopy upgraded with new paint and other improvements.

Harvey’s, which takes its name after the family patriarch Javier Escalante, is a place where people can buy groceries, pan dulce, tacos, gasoline and lottery tickets, among other things.

Others meet at Harvey’s to talk and discuss the world’s problems around a breakfast table.

However, propane has been its bread and butter since it opened the doors back in 1988.

Amparo Escalante, one of seven brothers and sisters, said the name Harvey was adopted because some of the Anglos who came by the store a while back started calling their father Harvey, rather than Javier.

She said their father was born and raised in Los Fresnos and their mother, Piedad, came from Mexico.

She said Harvey opened the doors selling propane only and started adding groceries and gasoline as time went by.

Harvey’s propane prices are competitive with the industry, and the business makes deliveries around a 50-mile radius.

Escalante said one of their brothers goes as far as Weslasco to install propane for homes and businesses.

As to the improvements being made right now, Escalante said it was about time.

“We wanted to make some changes but kept the name Harvey’s,” she said. “Wherever our father is, he is probably happy to know we have kept the store’s name. We are proud of the name Harvey. ”

Rogelio Villarreal is one many regulars who frequents the store.

“I came back from Houston in 2002,” said the Laureles resident while scratching off a lottery ticket. “I stop here about once a week – sometimes more.”
