It’s been 10 years since Dora Romero Elementary opened its doors for the 2009-10 school year.
Romero, a member of the Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees for 19 years, was remembered by the school in a ceremony held Aug. 22 at the campus.
Her daughters, Irene Romero and Los Cuates Middle School teacher Edna Medina, were at the school to participate in the celebration. They shared touching stories about their mother.
Dora Romero passed away in 2008 at the age of 74. Her husband, former Cameron County Justice of the Peace Luis Romero, died in 2011. The Luis Romero Annex Building, which houses several county offices on Texas Highway 100 in Los Fresnos, is named in his honor.
Dora Romero served on the board from 1970 to 1989. She was appointed to fill an unexpired term in 1970 and was elected for the first of six terms in 1971.
First-year DRE principal Laura Treviño and former principal Veronica Grimaldo were on hand to join in the celebration.
The DRE Folklorico Dance team and DRE Cheer Team performed for the crowd in attendance before the traditional cutting of a birthday cake. DRE teachers were presented with roses.
