One of the biggest events linked to the annual Los Fresnos Rodeo is coming up and it’s shaping up to be a hot and tasty one.
It’s the Cowboy Cook-off!
Up to $5,000 in prizes will be given out to the top chefs that come out with winning entries in the pan de campo, fajitas, brisket, spare ribs, chicken and frijoles categories.
The cook-off will be held Friday, Nov. 15th and Saturday, Nov. 16th and it will kick off with the fajita division.
In addition to the prizes awarded to the grand and reserved grand champion and the next five places, a people’s choice will also be presented.
The people’s choice award will be picked by people voting for the distinction that carries a trophy and $100.
On Satuday, the cook-off will be highlighted by a series of concerts brought by 3BAT Production.
Starting at 1p.m., six groups will entertain the crowds through midnight.
They are la Bomba Loca, Inevitable, Eztigma, Conteno, Carino and HomeTown Boys.
Jerry Bruce, a member of Los Fresnos Rodeo Committee, said they are seeking judges for the cookoff and urged anyone interested to contact them at LFRODEO.COM.
George Gomez, another committee member, said the hope is to make the cook-off as big of event as the annual rodeo.
“We started off with a little rodeo,” he said, “and look what we have today.”
In addition to the Cook-off, there will also be a car show from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, and the Buckin Good Time Market.
Rodeo committee member Larry Cantu said all the events, except entry to the rodeo bleachers, are free to the public.
