The Los Fresnos Rodeo arena received an award for having the Most Improved Justin Best Footing grounds by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

The award presentation took place Dec. 5 in Las Vegas.

Larry Cantu, a member of the rodeo committee, attended the event as a representative of the local organization founded 31 years ago this coming February.

He said the rodeo arena here was named as the best under the Texas Circuit, which is one of the largest such entities because of the number of rodeos held in the Lone Star State.

“It was awesome,” Cantu said. “People said they like our rodeo and that they love our tacos.”

He also said he sat next to people who have been at the rodeo, including an eight time rodeo world champion who has been to Los Fresnos several times and who said he will be back.

Mike Todd, the rodeo committee president, said earlier they are very pleased for getting the award.

“That is great,” he said during an interview. “We work hard out there trying to get the facility nice for the public and for the contestants. It’s always good when somebody recognizes the work you do.”

The Los Fresnos Rodeo got off the ground in 1989 as a small exhibition of cowboys and cowgirls and has now become the Best Little Rodeo in Texas sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, which is the largest such organization in the world.

And by the way, the 31st annual Los Fresnos Rodeo will be held on Feb. 15, 16 and 17 of 2020 and so is the 39th annual Cameron County Fair & Livestock Show.
