The old Little League baseball field in Los Fresnos is getting transformed into a new facility to play ball.

The field is having a major uplift thanks to the contribution of four Rio Grande Valley businesses that are donating thousands of dollars for the benefit of area youngsters. The donation also includes materials and labor.

The businesses are 107 Nursery & Garden Center of Edinburg, KBW Supply of Donna, 9 Kids Compost of Los Fresnos and a national company called Rain Bird.

The donation includes an irrigation system, controller, soil, trees and compost.

Joe Kitterman, of 107 Nursery & Garden, said the baseball field is going to be as good as it gets for youngsters to play ball.

“The old field was sort of a hazard,” he said. “It had pockets after pockets, and after a ball hit the ground it would roll and bounce so hard that some of the players were getting hit in the face.”

The field is being filled with several tons of dirt and it will become smooth and be planted with new grass, Kitterman explained.

He also said hundreds of ash trees will be planted, and both the vegetation and field will be served by a brand-new irrigation system.

“We are all glad to help out,” Kitterman said. “This park will be good for the next 25 years or more.”

The baseball field project has been mentioned on several occasions during the monthly meeting of the city council by City Manager Mark Milum and it’s now becoming a reality.

The improvement at the Little League baseball field started the first week of February and it should be finished by this week or the next.

And speaking of Little League, more players and teams are needed for the upcoming baseball season, but registration is required. The last chance to register to play is Feb. 25-27.

Registration will take place at 7:30 p.m. each day on the east side of the baseball field behind the public library.
