Senior spotlight: Jakob Medina

When did you start playing baseball?
I started my baseball journey at 4 years old.

What position do you play?
I play in the outfield and I pitch.

What do you like most about baseball?
I like the fact that it doesn’t take a certain physical build to play, so anyone can play.

What is the strongest part of your game?
I think the strongest part of my game is my hustle and selflessness.

Do you play any other sports?
I used to play football.

If you could only play one sport, which would it be?
I would only play baseball, obviously.

What are you currently doing to stay active?
I work out in my garage to stay in shape, and I find a way to practice my pitching and hitting with someone or by myself.

Who is your favorite professional athlete?
That would have to be Bryce Harper. I have been a big fan of his ever since he came up to the bigs in 2012. I even have his cleats.

What is your favorite sports team?
I have been an Astros fan since they donned the pinstripes back in the early 2000s.

What is your favorite food?
I love all Mexican food except menudo.

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie has to be “Major League” with Charlie Sheen.

What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is “Fahrenheit 451.” (By Ray Bradbury)

If you could live in any city in the world, where would that be?
I would love to live in The Woodlands in Houston.

If you could have dinner with a famous person, past or present, who would that be?
I would have dinner with Hank Aaron and talk about hitting and how he was so good for so long.

What is the best live concert you’ve ever seen?
I’ve never been to a concert

What is something most people don’t know about you?
My curveball is filthy.

What is your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject is science, especially physics.

Do you plan on going to college?
I plan on going to the University of Texas at Austin.

What do you want to major in?
I am going to major in mechanical engineering.

What would you like to do in the future?
I have an idea to make car engines that will be significantly more fuel efficient than they are now.

Talk a little bit about what it’s been like having to endure this break.
For me, this break feels like an extension of summer but without doing all the fun stuff.

IF the entire season is forced to be cancelled, how would that make you feel?
It would be heartbreaking because everybody in our locker room has had one goal in mind since Aug. 13 (when school began): Advancing deep into the playoffs.

Have you learned anything from having to deal with this unprecedented experience?
I have learned to manage my time well so I’m on top of my grades, but, most importantly, I’ve learned not to take what God blesses you with for granted.
