The 2020 high school football season may be more than two months away (maybe more if the COVID-19 pandemic interferes), but it’s never too early to look ahead.
The Falcons, who were a rather mediocre 3-8 last season but still made the playoffs, open the 2020 campaign with two preseason scrimmages. The first is set for Aug. 14 against PSJA and the second is at home on Aug. 21 against Edinburg Vela.
Then the real fun begins as they open the regular season with back-to-back away contests. On Aug. 28, the Falcons are at Edcouch-Elsa then on Sept. 4 they are at Gregory-Portland. Last year the Falcons lost to E-E 41-28 at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
The Falcons’ home opener comes in Week 3 on Sept. 11 with a huge game against perennial powerhouse Calallen. In 2019, the Wildcats went 12-2 overall and fell one win shy of advancing to the Class 5A Division II state semifinals.
Week 4 is a bye week for the Falcons, but when they return in Week 5 on Sept. 25, they host San Benito, who they lost to 34-30 last season.
In Week 6 on Oct. 2, the Falcons travel to Donna to take on Donna North, who joined District 32-6A in this year’s UIL realignment. Last season, the Chiefs were winless at 0-10.
The Falcons return home in Week 7 with an Oct. 9 contest against Brownsville Rivera, which narrowly defeated Los Fresnos last year, 21-20.
On Oct. 16, the Falcons hit the road again with an Oct. 16 game at Weslaco, which is also new to District 32-6A this season and, coincidentally, defeated the Falcons in the first round of the playoffs last year, 35-28.
Los Fresnos gets to stay home in Week 9 and 10 with a game on Oct. 23 against Harlingen and an Oct. 30 contest against Brownsville Hanna. Last season, the Falcons lost to the Cardinals 31-21, but defeated the Golden Eagles 24-17 for their only district win.
Finally, the Falcons close out the regular season on the road at Harlingen South on Nov. 6. South stunned the Falcons 24-3 last year.
Interestingly, all games this season begin at 7 p.m., which is a change from the usual 7:30 p.m. kickoffs that have come in the past.
