Los Fresnos teens beat pandemic with hot salsa

LOS FRESNOS – Who says there isn’t anything to do during today’s pandemic?

Since the coronavirus took over this past March, many people have been confined to their homes whether by their own initiative or by orders of elected officials such as from a city mayor or a county judge.

And since then, many of the things people have been accustomed to doing have been off limits. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry as the number of people catching the virus has not let up.

But in spite of that, two Los Fresnos High School students have been fighting boredom by working and making some money.

They have come out with a spicy product called Falcon Hot Salsa. “Falcon” because the two attend the Los Fresnos High and “hot salsa” because… Well, you guessed it.

That is what Hunter Thompson and Eric Zuniga have been doing since the pandemic has been impacting many people’s lives in one way or another.

Thompson said they use vegetables such as tomatoes, serrano peppers, onions and garlic, and buy some of the produce from area growers.

“We have been selling an average of 30 jars a month,” he said. “We think it’s awesome to be able to make a product some people enjoy.”

Their salsa is sold at a family owned store called True Foods Markets.
Thompson‘s father, Adam, said he is proud of the two boys.

“We have a commercial kitchen where they have been working with the salsa,” he said. “They both developed their own recipe, using the right ingredients and the proper measures.”

Thompson and Zuniga also help out at a farmer’s market held in the Harlingen area.
