After nearly two months, Los Fresnos has a new head man.
Los Fresnos CISD approved Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s David Cantu as their new athletic coordinator and head football coach.
Cantu spent nine seasons as the athletic coordinator with Brownsville Veterans, going 61-33 as the Chargers head coach.
“I had to think it over and talk about it with my family and my wife,” Cantu said when he first saw the job opening. “I did feel at peace when I applied for it. Five years ago, I did not apply, I didn’t feel I had accomplished enough and, in my heart, I just was not ready. This time around, I felt ready and I knew there would be plenty of good applicants, so I just wanted to throw my name in.”
Cantu replaces Patrick Brown, who was reassigned in early December after five seasons as Falcons head coach. In his five years, Brown guided the Falcons to three playoff appearances and two trips to the third round of the playoffs.
There is plenty of history in Los Fresnos for Cantu as he will return to his alma mater, where he began his coaching career at the junior high level and eventually served as an assistant for eight seasons in two separate stints between 2002 and 2009.
After the 2009 season, Cantu spent two seasons at Brownsville Rivera as a head coach before moving to Brownsville Veterans.
Since the school first opened in 2010, Cantu has been the program’s only coach and has had plenty of success. Now, he’s eager to return to one of the Rio Grande Valley’s premier districts.
“Those types of games in 32-6A, the atmosphere is hard to explain,” Cantu said. “John Grisham couldn’t write a book on how amazing that feeling is. Those are strong and established programs. I’m just overjoyed to be able to be in the mix with the coaches there is great.”
