Friends of the Port Isabel Public Library Receive $1500 Grant from Dollar General Literacy Foundation

Grant to support Port Isabel Public Library’s literacy programs

Port Isabel, Texas –August, 2013 –The Friends of the Port Isabel Public Library recently received a $1500 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Organization to support its literacy programs. Specifically, the grant will fund a program entitled Big Texas Literacy Program, learning about Texas and reading for fun.

This program, which is currently taking place, focuses on children who are behind grade level in their reading skills; have learning disabilities; or are new readers. It also is for children who speak English as their second language.

The Friends of the Port Isabel Public Library is a non-policy, non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the interests and welfare of the Port Isabel Public Library as a cultural and educational asset to the City of Port Isabel. The group has been in existence since 1972, and has helped fund numerous projects on behalf of the Library.

In recent years, the Friends partnered with the United Way of Southern Cameron County to provide a literacy program entitled “Success by Six” for local daycare centers and preschool children. The group also partnered with the Laguna Madre Boys and Girls Club to provide a family literacy program with the children helping their parents to learn English.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

The Friends of the Port Isabel Public Library meets at 4p.m. on the first Monday of each month (second Mondays due to holiday closures) during the months of September to May. Meetings take place in the Conference Room of the Port Isabel Public Library, 213 N. Yturria Street, Port Isabel. Membership is $10 per person, and is open to all.
