Hundreds of participants are expected to participate in the 4th Annual Leo Aguilar Foundation and Los Fresnos CISD 5K Walk/Run for Fun Saturday, Oct. 19, at Leo Aguilar Stadium.

A community health fair is scheduled jointly, sponsored by Los Fresnos CISD and Harlingen Medical Center. Free health screenings and nutritional information will be available from 8-10 a.m.

The race begins at 8 a.m. by the south entrance to the stadium. Early registration is encouraged; late registration begins at 7 a.m.

Entry fee is $10 for adults and $4 for students with four non-perishable food bank items. The first 100 paid entries will receive a free event t-shirt.

Awards will be presented to the top overall male and female participant, as well as the top three finishers in 11 age categories, starting with 6-10 years of age to 80 years and higher.

Proceeds from the race will go to the Leo Aguilar General Scholarship Fund, which has awarded scholarships to Los Fresnos High School graduates.

The 3.1-mile walk/run begins at Leo Aguilar Stadium and continues east down Texas Highway 100. For a stretch of 1.2 miles during the event, the four-lane highway is reduced to two lanes. The westbound lanes are closed as walkers and runners go east to St. Cecilia’s Church, where they will turn around and head west back to the stadium.

Rancho Viejo Elementary has won the school traveling trophy for two straight years for the most participants. The school brought 102 runners to the 2012 event.
