Lady Falcons Move to 10-0 in District
- Updated: October 24, 2014
LOS FRESNOS—There were two more dominating performances by the Lady Falcons this week, punctuated by a sweep of Harlingen South at Falcon Gym. Los Fresnos swept the season series from the Lady Hawks, rolling to victory by scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-15. Earlier in the week, the Lady Falcons went on the road to San Benito to face the dangerous Lady Greyhounds, and they came away with a hard-fought 25-19, 25-18, 25-15 straight set victory. With two more victories in the books, the Lady Falcons move to 10-0 in district play (30-9 overall) and continue maintain their one-game lead over Brownsville Veterans and their overall #1 Rio Grande Valley ranking for the fourth week in a row, as per RGVSports.com.
In the game against Harlingen South, the Lady Falcons came out strong, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the first set. Jackie Kingsbury was on fire all night, putting down 4 kills in the first set, while Sam Ibarra continued her imposing play at the net, spiking 3 balls and having 3 blocks of the Lady Hawk hitters. The Lady Falcons stretched a 4-point lead to the final 25-14 victory with great defensive play along the back line by Alex Moya (24 digs for the match) and Cristen Lumbreras (8 digs). The second set began with a 4-0 run by Harlingen South, but the Lady Falcons made a huge turnaround, exploding for 16 of the next 18 points, and cruised to an easy 25-12 victory. The final set was closer, with the Lady Falcons’ first lead coming at 14-13.
Peyton Sales had a tremendous performance in the third set with 12 assists, including 6 straight points with assists to Kingsbury, Ibarra, and Joseline Caraveo. Sales finished the match with 30 kills in only three sets, and threw in 3 aces and 4 kills of her own. The Lady Falcons closed the third set with a 12-2 run to take the match and the season series from the Lady Hawks.
It was a similar story for the Lady Falcons road game against San Benito earlier in the week. San Benito is fighting for that 4th playoff spot out of District 32-6A, and they were ready to face the Lady Falcons on their home court. It was not to be, as it turned into a comfortable, straight-set win for Los Fresnos, as Alex Moya performed her defensive wizardry again, coming up with 22 diving digs and pinpoint passes off of every hard-hit Lady Greyhound attack. Peyton Sales again quarterbacked the squad from her setter position, adding another 24 assists to her season total, and threw in 3 kills and 3 serving aces for good measure. Joseline Caraveo and Sam Ibarra had a devastating game at the net, with each of them tallying 8 kills and more than a few blocks. Sophomore Jackie Kingsbury added another 7 kills to her growing season total, and Jordan Martinez added another 5 kills to the balanced Lady Falcon attack. It was another great road win for the Lady Falcons against tough team from District 32-6A.
The Lady Falcons move their overall record to 30-9, 10-0 in district, with four games to play before the playoffs begin. They will be traveling to Harlingen to take on the Lady Cardinals and hosting the Rivera Lady Raiders this week, so come out and support the Lady Falcons!
