The 2016/2017 flu season is upon us, and in most families when one person gets sick the entire family gets sick. Help prevent the spread of the flu this season by being immunized with the seasonal flu shot.

Why get vaccinated?
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious disease that spreads around the United Sates every year, usually between the months of October and May. The Flu is caused by the influenza viruses, and is spread mainly by coughing, sneezing and close contact.

What is the flu shot?
The seasonal flu shot is a vaccine injection that protects adults and children 6 months of age and older against three to four influenza viruses that research indicates will be the most common during the current flu season. There is no live flu virus in the flu shot. Receiving the vaccine cannot cause someone to become sick with the flu.

Who should get the flu vaccine?
The CDC recommends annual influenza vaccinations for children ages 6 months and older, pregnant women, young children, teenagers, adults and seniors. Individuals with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, cancer or receiving cancer treatment, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, kidney or liver disease and obesity are all encouraged to receive an annual flu shot to avoid serious complications due to becoming infected with the flu.
