Construction of a new venue for indoor and outdoor events has begun on South Padre Island and it will provide a place for multiple activities such as concerts, receptions, school programs as well as viewing for fireworks and rocket launches for Space X.
A groundbreaking was held Wednesday, Feb. 7 on the site of the project on the south side of Cameron County-owned Isla Blanca Park known as Dolphin Cove.
Joe Vega, the park director, said the complex includes two indoor rooms, and an amphitheater to accommodate up to 4,000 spectators.
“We are really excited about this new venue,” he said. “which will provide all sorts of opportunities to people from all over the Rio Grande Valley.”
He said the $6.8 million project is being constructed from money collected from hotel-motel and rental motor vehicle taxes.
Construction of the multipurpose facility is expected to last anywhere from seven to nine months.
