Two students attending Los Fresnos High School were in a group of 13 who won prizes during the 11th annual Way to Happiness Scholarship competition.
They are Faith Austine Aquino and Denise Cabrales. The two students, along with the other 11, gave presentations on projects they have been working on while attending high school.
Aquino, who came from the Philippines, said their slogan in the school’s JROTC program is “What we do here shapes the world.”
She stressed the importance of preserving family ties and for caring for others.
Cabrales talked about her role in what is known as Brownsville Animal Defense, or BAD, a volunteer dog rescue organization serving the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Aquino and Cabrales each won a $100 gift card, joining seven others who received the same honors.
Three high school students, Xitlalli Zavala, Isaiah Mendoza and Jose Bustos took the top three awards.
Zavala and Bustos, students at Harlingen High School won $3,000 and $1,000 scholarships respectively, while Mendoza, who attends San Benito High School, received a $2,000 scholarship.
The event, which is sponsored by Harlingen Family Dentistry, was held Thursday, April, 5.
The experience they gained will benefit them in the future.
