LFHS Sends 23 students to UIL Academics Regionals

Twenty-three students from Los Fresnos High School and Los Fresnos United will compete in the  Region IV UIL Academics Spring Meet to be held at The University of Texas at San Antonio Friday and Saturday.

LFHS won the UIL Academics District 32-6A Championship March 24 in Brownsville. The Los Fresnos United UIL Freshman Academics Team also repeated as 32-6A District Champions for the Freshmen Division.

UIL Academics is composed of six speaking events and 16 non-speaking events.

Varsity students who placed in the top three of their respective divisions qualified for the regional meet. Members of first place teams also advance.

Joriam Martinez is competing at regionals for receiving the Top Physics score in the science competition, which includes scores in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

  • Annalisa Solis, Literary Criticism
  • Noe Leon, Mathematics
  • Victoria Chaparro, Persuasive Speaking
  • Joriam Martinez, Physics
  • Amanda Garcia, Poetry Interpretation
  • George Zepeda, Prose Interpretation
  • Jonathan Sandlin, Science
  • Alexis Salazar, Spelling
  • Aly Guerra, Spelling

Teams that will also be compete in regionals represent Literary Criticism, Mathematics, and Spelling and Vocabulary.

Regional qualifiers who are competing as part of a team include

  • Isaac Muñoz and Juan Pablo Sandoval, Mathematics
  • Athena Moore and Denise Gracia, Spelling
  • Isela Escobedo and Klara Garcia, Literary Criticism

Regional qualifiers who finish in the top three positions in their events qualify to advance to the UIL Academic State Meet May 4-5 at The University of Texas at Austin.

Last year, Jose Carlos qualified for the State Meet in the Current Issues and Events division.
