- Updated: May 25, 2018
MERCEDES – All four South Texas Independent School District (STISD) high schools ranked among the best in the state and nation in U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best High Schools list, released this week.
All four campuses made the top 50 list for Texas. The Science Academy of South Texas (Sci Tech) in Mercedes was named the 24th best high school in the state, while South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High) in Mercedes ranked 35th, South Texas Academy for Medical Professions (Medical Academy) in Olmito ranked 42nd, and South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (BETA) in Edinburg ranked 44th. Nationally, Sci Tech ranked 130th, Med High ranked 176th, Medical Academy ranked 220th and BETA ranked 227th. All campuses received gold medals, which are awarded to the top 500 schools based on highest college readiness.
Over 28,800 U.S. public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia were analyzed for the 2018 Best High Schools rankings. According to the magazine, the U.S. News team teamed up with North Carolina-based RTI International, a global nonprofit social science research firm, to compile the list, implementing a “comprehensive rankings methodology, which is based on these key principles: that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show it is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.” The full methodology is available at the following link: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/articles/how-us-news-calculated-the-rankings.
STISD is comprised of four magnet high schools – South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (BETA), South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High), South Texas Academy for Medical Professions (Medical Academy), and The Science Academy of South Texas (Sci Tech) – as well as two middle schools – Rising Scholars Academy of South Texas (Rising Scholars) and South Texas Preparatory Academy (STPA). All campuses are tuition-free and serve students from Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties. For more information, call 1-800-21STUDY or visit www.stisd.net.
