VBMC Teams Up with TSTC to Improve Nursing Skills

A new program to train existing nurses and nursing assistants is taking place thanks to a partnership between Valley Baptist Medical Center and Texas State Technical College.
The two Harlingen entities received a Skills Development Fund grant of $301,238 to train 155 people in the areas of health care and social assistance.
This include certified nursing assistants, registered nurses and nurse managers.
Once they complete the course, they are expected to earn an average hourly wage of $34.37, a press release from Texas Workforce Commission states.
Amanda Sotelo, a spokeswoman for TSTC, said classes began last week and training will take at VBMC-Harlingen.
Isidro Ramos, a TWC staff member, said this is the first time a grant is given to the Harlingen hospital for skills upgrade for their employees.
So far, about 40 RNs are enrolled and taking the class at TSTC.
A check presentation was held Friday morning at TSTC University Center Foyer. It was presented by Julian Alvarez, TWC commissioner representing labor.
