It’s conjunto time in Los Fresnos folks!

The first annual festival in which more than a dozen groups will entertain residents from here, from all over the Rio Grande Valley and from anywhere else in the Lone Star State will be held from Friday through Sunday of this week at Memorial Park at 900 Arroyo Blvd. across from Los Fresnos High School.

Talented groups such as Ramon Lucio y Conjunto Dominante, Rodney Rodriguez y Los Cucuy, Beni Medina y Su Conjunto, Los Angles del Sur, Ruben Garza y La Nueva Era and Los Fresnos Conjunto Alcon will play during different days.

Conjunto Alcon is a group from the local school district.
Admission is $6 each day and the gates will open at 5 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m Sunday.

The Conjunto Festival was created 26 years ago by The Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center, but due to financial constraints it was relocated to Los Fresnos.

The Community Development Corporation and the City of Los Fresnos and the local chamber of commerce threw in their support to have the festival here.

CDC allocated $5,000 for the project.

“For us, this is a gift served on a silver platter,” Enrique C. Jaurez, the board’s president, said during an early meeting held to announce the donation. “This is a gold mine.”

Ramon Ortiz, a chamber board member, said he is looking forward to the festival.

“I am hoping and praying there will be a big turnout,” he said. “Friday is football night and you know how people from here like their football team.”

Rogelio Nunez, a spokesman with the NMCAC, said they decided to relocate the festival from its original home base in San Benito for a major reason as the City of San Benito was charging $18,000 a year to host the event.
