City, EDC Make Generous Contributions to Rodeo, Livestock Show

Two organizations have received generous contribution from the City of Los Fresnos and the Community Development Corp.
The council approved a service agreement during its Tuesday, Nov. 13 meeting, or a week after CDC did the same.
The two recipient organizations are Los Fresnos Rodeo Committee and the Cameron County Livestock Show and Fair.
The city gave the rodeo committee $13,500 while the livestock show was given $5,500 to hold their annual events next year.
A week earlier, CDC allocated $12,500 to the rodeo while the livestock show received $8,000.
Mike Todd, the rodeo committee chairman, said they will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the PRCA-sanctioned extravaganza.
However, he said they donate thousands of dollars in scholarships and to non-profit entities like to the American Red Cross.
“We gave this year $20,000 to students from seven Valley high schools,” Todd said. “We also spent a big chunk of the money we made from the rodeo into the facility to make upgrades.”
One such upgrade was to add skyboxes and he said there is a demand for more as several businesses and other organizations are on a waiting list.
“We asking for the same amount you give us last year, “ he said, “but anything over that will be greatly appreciated.”
EDC usually give $10,000, but increased its donation by $1,500 to pay for the skyboxes for this year’s rodeo.
This time, however, it upped the amount by $1,000 more.
Board member Robert Lopez made the motion.
EDC approved giving $8,000, following a motion made by board member Irene Romero.
