Lucio Bill to Protect Historic Buildings Passes Senate

AUSTIN – Today, a bill by Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) to help preserve historic buildings across Texas was received by the Texas House of Representatives. The bill unanimously passed out of the Senate Thursday.

“Texas’ historic buildings are an important part of our culture. They are an enduring connection to our past,” Senator Lucio said. “This legislation helps build greater awareness of Texas’ unique historic places and encourages the long-term preservation of significant cultural resources that have survived in Texas communities for many generations.”

Senate Bill 111 requires the Texas Historical Commission to designate certain buildings as “Texas Historical Use Buildings.” This designation is to be given to any Texas building that is considered worthy of preservation because of its history, culture, or architecture. Additionally, a building must have been used for at least 150 years for a purpose that benefits the community in which it is located, as determined by the Commission.

Should Senate Bill 111 pass into law, these buildings would be eligible to apply for grant funds through the Preservation Trust Fund. This fund provides financial assistance for the acquisition, survey, restoration, or preservation of historic buildings, as well as for planning and educational activities leading to the preservation of historic property in the state.

Senate Bill 111 was one of the first bills filed by Senator Lucio this Session.
