Mariachi Nuevo Halcón to Defend State Title

The Los Fresnos High School Mariachi Nuevo Halcón will be out to defend its state title Friday, February 8th, when the group performs in the Texas Association of Music (TAME) Educators state competition in Grand Prairie.
Groups there will then be invited to participate in the State Mariachi Festival Feb. 22-23 at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg.
The three mariachi groups – the varsity Mariachi Nuevo Halcón, the junior varsity Mariachi Halcón Dorado and beginner Mariachi Halconcitos – have received outstanding ratings at recent events.
At the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest Feb. 2, at San Benito High School, all three groups received a Superior Division I rating. Members received 54 Division I medals.
At the All-Region 28 Mariachi auditions at Donna High School Jan. 29, Mariachi Nuevo Halcón students brought earned top honors.
Earning chairs were Juan Mario Alvarez, 1st Chair Male Voice; Eduardo Martinez, 1st Chair Trumpet and 2nd Chair Male Voice; Jorge Suarez, 1st Chair Guitarrón; and Rolando Esquivel, 4th Chair Guitar.
