LFHS Earns Division 1 Rating at UIL State Mariachi Competition
- Updated: March 8, 2019
by Ronnie Zamora/LFCISD
Mariachi Nuevo Halcón earned a Superior Division 1 rating at the 2019 UIL State Mariachi Festival Pilot Saturday at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg Performing Arts Complex.
Of the 70 schools participating, only 13 received Division I ratings from all three judges. Ten other schools had Division 1 ratings but had a Division 2 rating from one judge. The other 55 schools earned Division II or Division III ratings.
Five members of Mariachi Nuevo Halcón were named to the Outstanding Performers list, which is the unofficial equivalent to All-State selections. The LFHS/LFU Outstanding Performers were all trumpet players – Andrew Angeles, Fabiola Ahuja, Jose Carlos Jr., Luis Contreras and Eduardo Martinez.
The award was the second straight for Ahuja and Martinez, who were named Outstanding Performers in the 2018 competition.
The state competition was not for placements or ranking. It was an opportunity for the UIL to recognize outstanding individual and section performances from groups around the state.
The varsity and JV groups will compete in the UTRGV Festiba mariachi competition March 2 in Edinburg.
