District Receives Grant to Help with Mental Health Issues
- Updated: March 22, 2019
by Ronnie Zamora/LFCISD
Los Fresnos CISD received a grant from the Valley Baptist Medical Center Legacy Foundation to help the stigmas associated with suicide and mental health.
The “End the Stigma Connect” grant was presented at the monthly meeting of the Cameron County Mental Health Task Force Thursday in Harlingen.
The bulk of the grant will be used to fund a part-time counselor with a master’s degree in social work to assist with Los Fresnos CISD mental health issues.
Cameron County will employ the worker who will be housed at Los Fresnos CISD to set up a hub or community resource to deal with mental health issues – specifically suicide intervention.
Middle school students are the grant’s primary target as a means or early intervention in an attempt to “end the stigma” associated with suicide. The counselor will also be able to help all campuses and the Los Fresnos CISD community to deal with mental health issues.
