Local Barber Takes Second Place in World Competition

A Los Fresnos resident won second place in an international barber contest held in Connecticut.
Richard Alvarez, a 10 year veteran barber, attended the event last month and came home with a trophy, $500 worth of supplies for his shop and is proud of his accomplishment.
More importantly, he said he was the only person representing the Rio Grande Valley in a competition that brought the best barbers from all the over the world.
Alvarez owns Champs Barber Shop at Highway 100 and Paredes Line Road in the old Pittiās Pizza location.
He said attending and taking the number two spot has been one of his greatest achievements in life.
Alvarez went to a cosmetology college in Weslaco and attended Los Fresnos school district.
