A Los Fresnos resident won second place in an international barber contest held in Connecticut.
Richard Alvarez, a 10 year veteran barber, attended the event last month and came home with a trophy, $500 worth of supplies for his shop and is proud of his accomplishment.
More importantly, he said he was the only person representing the Rio Grande Valley in a competition that brought the best barbers from all the over the world.
Alvarez owns Champs Barber Shop at Highway 100 and Paredes Line Road in the old Pittiās Pizza location.
