The first passport fair held this year in Cameron County has been described as a success and more events are in the works to inform people and to apply for the document required to travel outside the United States.

Close to 70 people showed up Saturday, July 13 at the county annex building on Texas Highway 100 in Los Fresnos.

Among them were Maria Gallardo.

She said she applied for her passport and was glad to have the opportunity to do it here and on a Saturday.

“You know, some of us don’t have time to go and apply during the work week,” Gallardo said. “I hope they do it again.”

She said she still needs to apply for passports for her three children.

The fair was held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the county’s annex building at 745 W. Ocean Blvd. as a public service provided by Cameron County District Clerk Eric Garza.

He described the fair as a success due to the number of people who showed up.

“Anytime you have fifty people you are doing well,” he said. “It provides enough funds to pay for overtime to our employees.”

Garza said his office has 42 employees who are certified when it comes to processing passports.

A passport application costs $110 and $30 if an applicant seeks a travel card which is good to go by land and sea to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda.
