A fundraiser for Los Fresnos Rotary Club was held recently and it produced a good response from the public.
Up to 500 plates consisting of a half barbecue chicken, beans, rice and potato salad were prepared and sold for $8 each.
Club members and volunteers were on hand from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the parking lot at Zarsky’s Lumber.
The tasty and juicy chicken was cooked by 1848 BBQ, a restaurant located on Avalon Drive, off Palm Boulevard in Brownsville. The trimmings were prepared by La Cocina de Conchis of McAllen.
Martin Magallanes, a Rotarian, said the fundraiser netted about $3,000 in profits and the money will go into the club’s administrative fund.
“We are very happy for the way it turned out,” he said about the club’s first fundraiser. “We had great support from the community.”
Hector Cruz of San Benito and Dora Garcia of Los Fresnos, who stopped by the stand to pick up plates, said they were glad to help out.
The Rotary Club was chartered in April of this year and it now has 25 members.
