First Class Day Brings Out Mixed Emotions

Usually, the lines are long for drop-offs for younger children everywhere including Los Fresnos CISD’s nine elementary schools.
But on the first day of class Wednesday, the traffic lines were long for parents to park their vehicles and escort their children inside – especially the little ones.
Once inside, the emotions could be seen everywhere, and they were all different.
Most students entering Rancho Verde Elementary on the first class day were happy to be back. “I’m so excited to come back to school,” one student said. “Mom, you don’t have to walk me inside, I know where my room is,” another said.
After greeting students coming off buses, new RVE principal Mary Chavez greeted parents and students at the main lobby.
Chavez and Dora Romero Elementary principal Laura Treviño are two new elementary principals. Two other principals moved locations – Rosemary Leal is now principal at Olmito Elementary and Veronica Grimaldo is now principal at Los Fresnos Elementary.
Students who had the biggest transitions were at the three middle schools, Los Fresnos United and Los Fresnos High School.
Sixth graders coming to middle school made new friends who came from other elementary schools. New Los Fresnos United principal William Roach was very visible assisting students who were not sure where their first period classrooms were.
Students who were at LFU last year as sophomores are now juniors at LFHS.
At the end of the day, a parent who picked up their children reported that her young daughter fell asleep in the car on the way home after a long first day of school.
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year.
