Some of the improvements the Los Fresnos Rodeo Committee has made to the facility where cowboys and cowgirls have been competing for the last 30 years has paid off.
The arena where all the action takes place has been awarded as the Most Improved Justin Best Footing grounds by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.
Mike Todd, the rodeo committee president, said they are very pleased for getting the distinction.
“That is great,” he said. “We work hard out there trying to get the facility nice for the public and for the contestants. It’s always good when somebody recognizes the work you do.”
Larry Cantu, also a committee member, said he believes this is the first time they get such an award.
“This is actually given out by the barrel racing competitors,” he said. “They are the ones who nominated us.”
Cantu said improving the arena has been the result of a lot of money and work.
“We have put in lots of truckloads of arena sand,” he said. “However, the arena sand has to be the right type so it can hold.”
The award will be given during a WPRA luncheon to be held during the first week of December.
And guess what?
Cantu has been selected to travel to Las Vegas to accept the award on behalf of the rodeo committee.
