by Ronnie Zamora/LFCISD

The time is near for the competition elementary school students have been preparing for since the start of the school year.

Almost 500 students from the nine district elementary schools will participate in the Elementary Academic Event Saturday, Dec. 14 at Los Fresnos High School.

The students from the nine elementary schools in Los Fresnos CISD will take part in 18 events including a new event Maps, Charts and Graphics for students in Grade 5.

Other events include Oral Reading in grades 2-5, Science in Grades 4 and 5, Mathematics in Grade 2 and 3, Number Sense in Grades 4 and 5, Creative Writing in Grade 2, Ready Writing in Grades 3 and 4, and Oral Reading in English and Spanish.

More than 200 coaches for the students will also be there. They are classroom teachers who have been preparing students for this event since early in the school year.

In addition, there are about 100 judges and volunteers who will assist in making the event a success. The total does not include hundreds of parents who are also expected to attend.

In 2018, Rancho Verde Elementary ended Villareal Elementary two-year win streak from 2016 and 2017. Palmer-Laakso Elementary finished second and Villareal third.

Other past champions winners include:

  • 2015: Los Fresnos Elementary
  • 2014: Olmito Elementary
  • 2013: Los Fresnos Elementary
  • 2012: Los Fresnos Elementary

The awards presentation is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the LFHS Gymnasium.
