The Los Fresnos Falcons are in no hurry to end the 2019-20 season.
After concluding the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record to clinch the District 32-6A title, the top-seeded Falcons are now marching into the second round of the playoff after an easy 68-49 bi-district playoff win over Edinburg North on Feb. 24 at Edinburg North High School.
Freshman guard Gerry Martinez led the way for the Falcons with 16 points. Meanwhile, Ricky Altamirano added 14, Elian Gonzalez 13, Luis Gonzalez dropped in 11 and Antonio Aldrighetti finished with 10 points.
Up next for the Falcons (31-3 overall) was an area-round match set for Feb. 28 against Laredo Alexander, which beat McAllen High 62-42 on Feb. 25.
With a victory against Alexander, the Falcons would advance to the third round of the playoffs and be one win away from qualifying for the Class 6A Region IV tournament in San Antonio, which would get underway March 6.
But while the Los Fresnos boys basketball team continues its playoff march, the girls hoops squad ended its season after a 78-52 area-round loss to Laredo United on Feb. 21 at Corpus Christi Ray HIgh School.
The Lady Falcons entered the second-round affair feeling confident after a 48-37 win over Edinburg Vela on Feb. 18. Moreover, they had won their last 7 of 8, including a seeding playoff game win over Harlingen South.
The Lady Longhorns, however, were a little too much for the Lady Falcons to handle and the season unfortunately closed on their 2019-20 season with a 23-15 overall record.
