Los Fresnos Christmas parade must go on

The Los Fresnos 2020 Christmas parade will go on regardless of the pandemic taking place today.

As one of the city’s biggest events of the year, the festival will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12 but it will not take place as it has in year’s past.

This time the annual parade, titled “the Magic of Christmas,” is going to be fashioned after the recent Halloween festival.

Those wanting to get into the holiday spirit will not be allowed to roam around the grounds of the city’s Memorial Park as they have done in the past, but will remain in their vehicles during the time the festival will be going on at the grounds of the rodeo arena.

The main reason behind the change is because of the pandemic.

Val Champion, the Chamber of Commerce executive director, said the first Christmas drive thru parade is coming up this Saturday.

It’s called a reverse Christmas parade because people will drive thru rather than a parade participant doing so.

“We would like to have many businesses participating,” Champion said.

“We want them to decorate their booths and floats to announce their business operations.”

Anyone interested in participating was encouraged to stop by the chamber office at Los Fresnos City Hall at 520 E. Ocean Blvd. to pick up an entry form or call 956-233-4488.

All entries must have been submitted to the chamber office by 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8.

There was no fee to have a float or booth.

Entries were encouraged to follow the Parade Theme “Magic of Christmas”.

Trophies were awarded to the top three winners and will be announced December 14.

The City of Los Fresnos, the chamber, Community Development Corp., Rodeo Committee and the school district, have partnered to ensure the success of this year’s festival.
