LOS FRESNOS, TX — On Thursday, March 24th, T-Mobile announced that Los Fresnos Rodeo had been selected as one of the 25 small towns; winning the Hometown Grant. This grant is specific to small towns and is to help community development projects to ‘re-energize’ towns and build upon what makes them unique.
The Rodeo’s grant, according to a recent press release, will go towards building a permanent covered stage and a paved roadway at the Rodeo grounds. This will help bring more concerts and other great events to the community.
The Los Fresnos Rodeo Chairman, Larry Cantu says that the paving will be done towards the entranceway, reaching the livestock show grounds, which will be great for all the trailers and contestants that drive back that way come showing time.
On the same note, Mark Milum, the past Chairman says “This grant will assist in continuing to upgrade and develop the Rodeo Grounds, making it easier to move about the ground with the added asphalt areas…”
The Rodeo also mentions that they will have their own permanent covered concert stage. This will save tremendously in costs and is a much-needed addition to the Rodeo! Cantu highlights the benefits of having this set stage, mentioning that now that the stage will be built, it will take away from having to pay for third-party entities; which is one less expense.
Milum says “Not only will it be beneficial for the rodeo and its patrons but this could bring additional concert events throughout the year..”
Los Fresnos Mayor, Alejandro Flores says “The local Rodeo committee has worked diligently every year to make the annual rodeo a memorable experience,” He continues by saying “I am pleased that the $50,000 Hometown Grant offered by T-Mobile will enable a permanent performance stage as well as other upgrades which will result in more great events to take place in the city of Los Fresnos.”
Larry Cantu says “The Hometown Grant from T-Mobile is truly a blessing for the Los Fresnos Rodeo. The grant will allow us to make improvements to the grounds that will help us reduce expenses and allow us to have more events during the year that bring families together in our area. The T-Mobile grant will also help us with our scholarship program for students in Cameron County. We are especially grateful to T-Mobile for awarding the Los Fresnos Rodeo with its Hometown Grant.”
On March 23rd, the 27 members of the Rodeo committee agreed to give out 20 $1,000 Scholarships to students for college. What’s more? Cantu says that any student in the Cameron County area can apply for this “2022 Continuing Education Scholarship”. Just another one of the many ways Rodeo is giving back to the community.
If you are wanting to apply for the 2022 Continuing Education Scholarship you can visit their website, and submit it before April 30th!
