Los Fresnos captures the Bi-District Round in a five-set thriller

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons faced off against the Edinburg Lady Bobcats of District 31-6A in the Bi-District Round of the 2022 UIL Class 6A Region four playoffs. Los Fresnos, who finished the regular season as the number two seed of 32-6A, looked to go back to the Area Round. Los Fresnos reached the Area Round in 2021, where they fell to Laredo United.

This matchup also had a lot more significance for Edinburg. This match was a rematch of the 2021 Bi-District round in which the Lady Falcons won 3-1. The Edinburg Lady Bobcats, who finished as the number three seed of 31-6A, were on a mission to avenge their loss to Los Fresnos in non-district play earlier this year, a game in which the Lady Falcons won 3-1.

There is an old saying: “for every action, there is a reaction”. That was certainly the case with Los Frenos and Edinburg. Set one started off with a back and forth battle between the Lady Cougars and Lady Falcons. Los Fresnos eventually slipped away and captured set one 25-19.

Set two again started off with a back and forth matchup between both teams. Solid offense and great defense was the tempo set by Los Fresnos and Edinburg. Eventually, key plays which led to crucial points were made by Edinburg to propel themselves over Los Fresnos 25-15 to capture set two, putting the match at 1-1.

Los Fresnos, who went into the third set guns blazing, equally matched with Edinburg, The same tempo of efficient offense and solid defense continued in the third set. In what was a complete battle for control, Los Fresnos Pulled away to capture set three 25-22, going ahead two games to one.

Edinburg, knowing they were down 2-1, bounced back and took control. Despite Los Fresnos clawing back, the Lady Bobcats held off the Lady Falcons to win the fourth set 25-19, forcing a set five.

With both teams 2-2 and a trip to the area round on the line, both teams came out with a surge of offense. A back-and-forth game between Edinburg and Los Fresnos, both teams pulled out all the stops. Los Fresnos, thanks to key plays, slipped away and captured set five 15-12, winning 3-2.

Los Fresnos willed through against a tough team. With the win, the Lady Falcons improved to 35-7 on the season and captured the Bi-District title for the second straight season over Edinburg High. Los Fresnos will now take on San Antonio O’Connor of 29-6A in the Area Round of the playoffs.
