Los Fresnos News
Students from Los Fresnos came to compete in many different competitions at this year’s Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. Los Fresnos News has been doing it’s best to keep up with all the activity, and may have more coming to follow. Though we strive, we can’t cover everything that happens, here are some of the things Los Fresnos CISD participated in this year at the 2023 Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. They include workshop projects from students, livestock animal show, artwork, and this year Los Fresnos CISD students even participated in the youth archery competition!
Archery
Edna Sanchez, one of the Los Fresnos FFA Advisors and the chief archery instructor for the kids says that there were four students that showed a big interest last year, and really wanted to compete. Sanchez says these students already had training and were very good.
“Four individuals came up to me saying, ‘Sanchez, we’re adamant, we enjoy doing this, how can we get involved?” Before Sanchez knew it, she had 13 students. Every Wednesday, students practice at the LFU cafeteria. Sanchez shared her excitement saying “They did very well, Very very well.”
Sanchez explains some of her students compete nationally. Izabella Flores is one of them. Being in the 6th through 8th-grade category, Izabella placed 4th with 474 points. In 5th place was Justin Munoz scoring 421 points, and Analisa Carlos placed 6th. In NASP Comp for 9th grade through 12th Olivia Lugo placed 2nd with 293 points, and Chloe Grienier in 3rd with 236 points. Ian Garza placed 4th with 210, Jamie Gonzalez in 6th with 129, and Stefany Gonzalez in 7th with 48 points.

Shop Projects
Shifting over to shop projects, CTE Director, Rolando Guerra says, “The girls did great.”
Chloe Grienier received 1st place in Home Furniture and Conveniences with a beautifully sanded and stained project.
Carlie Grienier received 2nd place on the cutting board she made and 2nd place on her Taxidermy. Chloe and Carlie Grienier are in 7th and 4th grade.
“They have been working on their 4 projects (2 each) for 45 days. The Girls would dedicate their after-school time and weekends to working on their projects.” CTE Counselor, Celina Grienier says.
Stockshow Animals
At this time showings are still going on, but this is the information we’ve gotten thus far…
Mc’Kayla Dimas in 4th grade placed third place in her class with her breeding goat, Layla. Elijah Evan Moreno, a Junior in High school and Los Fresnos FFA student, placed 9th place in breeding heifer. Thank you Cassie Moreno for sending in both of these students’ standings. Unfortunately, no other information was given on Livestock at this time.
Moving on we have the written, multiple-choice test. First, the swine Skillathon. Though this is simply a written test, students definitely need to know their stuff. Mrs. Sanchez mentions the test is over 100 questions and is on the feed for swine, what percentage of fat, protein, and other vital factors, what vaccines your livestock requires, and much of the work that goes into raising, in this case, swine. From ages 14-18 Grayson Row received 4th place, and Olivia Grace received 8th place.
Under Beef Skillathon, senior division, Audrey Lynn Hernandez who is a sophomore, received 3rd place in her division.
Photography and Art
Olivia Lugo, grade 7, placed 2nd in her division under black and white photography. Steven Spellane in the 6th through 8th-grade range placed 5th in his division. Cameron Spellane in the 9th through 12th-grade category received 1st place for his photo.
Under art, Mariah Atkison placed 5th place under acrylic art for 6th through 8th and Caroline Rowe in 3rd grade received 2nd place in her category & grade level. Congratulations to all the students; those mentioned and those missed! Keep up the hard work and dedication, Go Falcons!
