A LFCISD Student’s Essay Earns Spot in the Library of Congress

By Mike Villarreal

Scarlett Galloway, a Los Cuates Middle School student in Los Fresnos CISD, has been honored for her exceptional talent and dedication. Her essay has earned a spot in the Library of Congress as part of the Humanity First Collection. Scarlett was selected as a finalist in the National Campaign to Stop Violence by Cameron County, TX, and became the Do the Write Thing 2024 Student National Ambassador.

This writing program for middle school students, Do the Write Thing (DTWT), is part of the National Campaign to Stop Violence. It aims to help students become active community members, create an impact to stop youth violence and examine the effects and causes of youth violence. The program includes students listening, writing, and collaborating to impact their communities positively.

The National Campaign to Stop Violence brings together government, businesses, and community leaders to make resources available at the school, classroom, community, and individual levels. Its goal is to help students commit and take responsibility for ending violence in their homes, lives, and communities

The Do the Write Thing “Challenge” program gives middle school students a chance to study the impact of violence on their lives in classroom discussions and written form. This has been shown to help students commit to making changes to the problem and empower them to reduce violence in their neighborhoods, schools, and homes. Since its inception, over one million students have taken part in the “Challenge,” with over 400,000 of these students having accepted the commitment not to be involved in violence and by preparing writings on solutions and courses for youth violence.

Scarlett’s achievement is a source of pride for Los Fresnos CISD, and her powerful essay now resides in the prestigious Library of Congress. Her accomplishment inspires us all to strive for a better world. Keep up the excellent work, Scarlett! The community of Los Fresnos is very proud of your accomplishment and can’t wait to see how you will next make an impact on our community.
