Los Fresnos Schools to Honor Veteran’s Day

By Mike Villarreal

Veterans will be honored guests at several ceremonies across Los Fresnos CISD schools this Veterans Day. Olmito Elementary School will hold the Olmito Veterans Day Parade, while Dora Romero Elementary will host both a ceremony and a parade. Liberty Memorial Middle School will commemorate Veterans Day with a ceremony in the LMMS gymnasium. Los Cuates Middle School will also organize a Veterans Day event on its campus. Keep an eye out for other school events as well. These schools proudly recognize and celebrate the friends, family, and staff who have served our country.

Veterans Day is a time to reflect on and honor the military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. This nationally observed holiday is celebrated annually to recognize our veterans’ bravery, patriotism, and sacrifice, providing an opportunity for the nation to express gratitude for their dedication and service.

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1938, it was officially designated as a federal holiday and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all American veterans, both living and deceased.

The origins of Veterans Day are rooted in the end of World War I, with the armistice—or cease-fire—declared at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. This marked the end of hostilities in the war, making November 11 a day to honor and remember all veterans.

Veterans Day has become a day of appreciation and reflection for the military service of veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. It presents an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge their contributions to our nation.

There are many ways to show patriotism, such as visiting veterans’ memorials or cemeteries to pay respect to their sacrifices. You can also display a flag to honor veterans or volunteer with organizations that support them, like veterans service organizations or VA hospitals. Additionally, you can celebrate a veteran by donating to a cause that provides assistance to veterans and their families.

Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or deceased—but mainly thanks to living veterans who served our country honorably during wartime and peacetime. If you know a veteran, consider expressing your gratitude with a simple thank you for their service.
